Sindhutai Sapkal

Why in News

    • Renowned social worker and Padma Shri awardee Sindhutai Sapkal passed away on 04 January 2022. He was 75 years old. She was known as the mother of orphans.

Key point

    • Sindhutai Sapkal devoted her whole life to the life of orphans.
    • Sindhutai was the mother of over 1400 children and grandmother of over a thousand.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of Sindhutai and expressed condolences to his family members.
    • Sindhutai is called ‘Mother Teresa’ of Maharashtra. He spent his whole life in the service of orphan children. He adopted and looked after about 1400 orphan children. For this noble work, he was also honored with many other awards including Padma Shri.
    • The country’s President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted that Sindhutai Sapkal’s life was dedicated to courage, dedication and service.

Sindhutai Sapkal

    • Sindhutai Sapkal was born on 14 November 1948 in Wardha district of Maharashtra. In childhood, people used to call him ‘Chindi’.
    • Sindhutai was awarded the Padma Shri award in 2021. Apart from this, he was honored with more than 750 awards. He always spent the prize money in orphanages.
    • Born in a poor family in Wardha, Maharashtra, Sindhutai had to face discrimination for a long time due to being a daughter. Sindhutai Sapkal’s life began as a child who was not needed by anyone.
    • Sindhutai’s mother was opposed to her going to school. Although his father wanted him to study. So when she was 12 years old, she was married. Her husband was 20 years older than her.
    • Sindhutai adopted more than 1400 children in her life. Sindhutai’s family is very big. He has 207 Jamai, 36 daughters-in-law and more than 1000 grandchildren.
    • Let us tell you that 6 organizations run in his name which helps orphan children. In 2010, a film was made in Marathi on the life of Sindhutai.
    • He even begged on the streets to feed the orphans. On receiving the Padma Shri award, Sindhutai said that this award belongs to my colleagues and my children. He appealed to the people to adopt orphan children.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation

Why in News

    • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has appointed Alka Mittal as interim chairman and managing director of the company.

    • Alka Mittal has become the first woman head of the country’s largest oil and gas producer.
    • Alka Mittal will replace Subhash Kumar. Subhash Kumar has retired on 31 December 2021.
    • Alka Mittal is 59 years old and the first woman to head an oil and gas exploration and production company.
    • The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in an order issued on January 3 said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal to hand over the additional charge of the post of Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, to Alka Mittal. Is.
    • The DoPT in its order said that Alka Mittal will be the interim chairman of ONGC for a period of six months with effect from January 01, 2022 or until further orders. Earlier Nishi Vasudev was the first woman to head an oil company. He took over the reins of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) in the year 2014.

About Alka Mittal

    • Alka Mittal joined the Board of Directors of ONGC on November 27, 2018 and was also the first woman to achieve this feat.
    • She joined ONGC in 1985 as a graduate trainee and had previously worked in Corporate Office as Head CSR.
    • Alka Mittal has been on the board of ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (OMPL) as Nominee Director of ONGC since August 2015.
    • Prior to this, she headed HR functions in various capacities in regions including Vadodara, Mumbai, Delhi and Jorhat and was also Head of Corporate Communications, Delhi in 2009.

Features of Reactor-3

    • This indigenously designed 700 MWE KAPP-3 nuclear plant is a proud example of Make in India.
    • After the nuclear reactor becomes operational, India has stood in the line of countries which have nuclear power technology.
    • India has developed a three-stage nuclear program. It has developed a three-stage nuclear program based on a closed fuel cycle, where the fuel used in one stage is reprocessed to produce fuel for the next stage.
    • Built in India, this 700 MWE plant has been developed and operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).
    • The 700 MWe KAPP-3 reactors is the third phase of this nuclear power station. This is a heavy water reactor plant, which has got the status of best power station in India.
    • The KAPP-3 reactor is the largest heavy water reactor in the country, which has been built indigenously. In this, natural uranium will be used as fuel. Till now the largest heavy water reactor was in Tarapur, Maharashtra. It is of 540 MWE.

Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant

    • Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant is a nuclear power plant in India.
    • Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant is located 80 km from Surat city of Gujarat on the banks of Tapti river. The plant also has two more stations KAPS-1 and KAPS-2 of 220 MWE.
    • The first plant was started in the year 1993 and the second was started in the year 1995.
    • The third plant was commissioned in June 2010, which has just been completed and has started functioning. The Government of India plans to increase its nuclear power power from 6780 MWe to 22,480 MWe by the year 2031. This will give the country a major source of nuclear energy.

Indian Army banned 89 apps

Why in News

    • Indian Army has banned 89 apps. The army has instructed its officers and employees to immediately remove all the apps included in the ban from their smartphones.

    • Now Indian soldiers will also not be able to use social media from their smart phones. Chinese apps that the government has banned include apps like Tiktok, Helo and Camscanner.

Army banned 89 apps
