Cancer in Mizoram: A Growing Concern
Why in the news?
A recent study published in The Lancet Regional Health in Southeast Asia found that Mizoram has the highest cancer incidence rate in India.
What are the other findings?
- It also found that cancer incidence and mortality have been consistently increasing in the state over the past 18 years.
- Stomach and lung cancer are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among men and women, respectively.
- The study also found that cancer incidence and mortality are growing among the younger generation in Mizoram.
Possible causes of the high cancer rate in Mizoram:
- Static lifestyle: The Mizoram population is becoming increasingly sedentary, which is a known risk factor for cancer.
- Dietary patterns: The Mizoram diet is high in processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables, which is also a known risk factor for cancer.
- Genetic predisposition: The Mizoram population is endogamous, meaning that there is a high degree of intermarriage within tribal groups. This can lead to an increased risk of genetic diseases, including cancer.
- Other factors also include a lack of awareness and resources among the people of Mizoram.
It is important to note that addressing the cancer burden in Mizoram will require a concerted effort from the government, healthcare system, and community. By working together, we can make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families.
Do You Know?
- Mizoram is the second least populated state, while “Sikkim” is the least populated state in India.

Indian Naval Personnel Death Sentence in Qatar
Why in the news?
The recent death sentence given to eight former Indian Navy personnel by a court in Qatar is likely to have a significant impact on India-Qatar trade relations.
About the Case:
- The death sentence verdict against eight former Indian Navy personnel by a court in Qatar is deeply shocking, especially given that the charges against them have not been formally made public.
- The fact that the charges are related to espionage is even more concerning, as this could have a significant impact on India-Qatar trade relations.
How could the death sentence case impact India-Qatar trade relations?
- Liquid Natural Gas (LNG): Qatar could retaliate against India by imposing new trade restrictions or by raising prices for LNG. India’s largest LNG importer, Petronet LNG, has a long-term contract with Qatar for the import of 8.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG.
- Uncertainty for Indian Expatriate Community: Qatar hosts a significant Indian expatriate community, and their well-being is a matter of concern for both governments.
- Loss of Business Confidence: The case could erode business confidence between the two countries.
Do You Know?
- Qatar is the world’s largest exporter of LNG.
The Way Forward:
Efforts have been made to address the situation, including high-level talks and engagements between the leaders of both countries. There is an existing agreement between India and Qatar regarding the transfer of convicted prisoners, which might provide a potential solution.
